The Near-Infra Red technology is used since 30 years to measure organic materials online (e.g. gasoline, food, pharmaceutical,....) as organic molecules have a very good signature in the NIR spectra and are therefore easier to measure than inorganic minerals with strong crystal structures. As in coal beside the inorganic ash also the organic carbon and moisture content is of major interest, NIR is the obvious method for the coal application and was intensively tested in the laboratory. Currerfily PGNAAs are used in the mine, but due to the low measurement accuracy there is no online method so far successful for the gasifier control in the power plant. SpectraFlow is the only online analyzer available on the market to measure the chemical composition of the gasifier feed.
